I have been to a number of different countries but never to one where a large proportion of the people are poor or ill. I have been to Canada, China, Europe and New Zealand. I hope to learn about the way that people whose lives are much less advantaged than I have. I hope to help change for the lives of the people I interact with in India for the better and to make their lives more enjoyable.

ARACKAL, Fr Thomas– Norbertine Father – India - POH08 India Chaplain
Dear Pilgrims

I am Father Thomas, the chaplain of POH 2008.Its really a great privilege for me to be part of the POH 2008.

Iam a Catholic Religious Priest belonging to a Religious Order called Norbertine. I was born in southern India

and did my studies here in India and was ordained as a Priest in 2005.I worked in Australia in Lumen
Christ College and St.Norbert College, Perth as Chaplain in 2004. At present I am working as the Principal
of St.Norbert School in India. This is my second Pilgrimage. It’s going to be a Great experience for all of us.

It’s a Journey where we will definitely meet God in the sacred place (with mother Teresa of Kolkotta) and
serve him in the Market Place (with the poor and sick in the MC Homes). If it’s the love of Christ that
transformed Teresa in to Mother Teresa, May that same love lead us in our pilgrimage. And as Mother says lets
not only love but love until it hurts!

Wish you all a Life changing experience at Kolkotta.

BANHAM, Rebecca – Seymour Girls School – Adelaide

Hello all! My name is Rebecca Banham but everyone calls me Bec. I am 15 and am currently studying yr 10 at Seymour College in SA. I love to play badminton for the school (please don’t laugh!) and according to my friends, I am quite good. I have an ENORMOUS passion for music, and there is rarely a moment where you won’t find me singing or humming to myself! : P I play the piano, I sing and I have mucked around with the guitar a couple of times and have enjoyed it immensely. I also LOVE drama and I love a laugh, so those two qualities combined can amount to a rather interesting time! I LOVE to travel and can’t wait till I graduate from school so I can go travelling with my friends! When I leave school I would love to do something in the medical profession, like become an emergency doctor or a paramedic. I must admit I am a bit of a self confessed odd ball, but wouldn’t have it ANY other way! I am a Christian and go to church regularly. I see my friends as my family, as we are all so close. I love to make new friends and see the pilgrimage of hope as a great opportunity for this to occur. I really don’t know what to expect from the P.O.H. But I do know that I am VERY privileged to have the opportunity of going, and I know that it will definitely change my life, and my perspective on the world. I wanted to do the pilgrimage of hope because I was given the opportunity where I could help people from another culture, experience that culture, grow and learn about my self, and serve. I am SO excited about this trip and cannot WAIT to talk, meet and share this experience with all of you! Hope to talk to you all soon!

BOLTON, Shen Lyn – St Hilda’s Anglican Girls School – Perth

Hey guys! I’m Shen Lyn, people call me Shen and I’m from Singapore and Australia. I’m a boarder right now at St. Hilda’s. I’ve travelled quite a lot and lived in some pretty crazy places in this world like Dubai, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Buninyong, Richmond and right now Singapore so I am quite the pro when it comes to plane rides, however I still can’t get the ‘ears not popping’ down… but you know, that’s what starbursts are for! I love playing all kinds of sports and I’m a huge basketball fan, NBA or And1 anyone?

I’ve been part of charity work back where I used to live and I’m so amped for this trip to go over to India and help out in any way I can over there and to meet you all!

Pilgrimage of Hope, India 2008 here we come !!

BORNEO, Brother Rodney – Seminarian Archdiocese of Kolkata - POH08 India Service Work Advisor

Hi folks! I am Rodney Borneo and I am a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Calcutta. Presently I am completing the theological studies required for my ordination. I was born in Calcutta, have grown up in this city, the City of Joy, and I am indeed grateful to God for calling me to serve His people in this city. As a young boy it was my privilege to have known and met Blessed Teresa of Calcutta and it goes without saying that her life, mission and vision of service to the “poorest of the poor” has been a great inspiration behind my calling.

This would be my second year of association with the Pilgrimage of Hope. Last year I was just a casual facilitator and I am thrilled that this time I will be working full time with this great movement of young people. I must tell all you guys out there that this ‘pilgrimage’ experience is not going to be one that can be easily explained or articulated. It will move you, give you reason for delight, expand the horizons of your vision of the human family and even present you with thoughts of doubts mixed with hope. But this is what the land of India had always done to so many travelers since time immemorial. For you dear friends, India and Calcutta will offer even more because you do not come to us as mere visitors but as pilgrims. Drawing from my interactions with the pilgrims of POH07 I can tell you this that this pilgrimage may not change things for you but it will surely change you for things.

BRADY, Charlotte (POH07, Firbank)  - Peer Support Leaders – POH08 India PSL

Hello everyone. It feels like only yesterday when I was writing my Pilgrim profile for this web site, some 12 months ago. After journeying to India last year with POH, words cant, and don’t do the experience justice. My time there was incredible, and my memories unforgettable. Turning 17 in August, I’m so excited about having the opportunity to travel back to India, to see the sights, smell the smells, and feel the love.

A favourite quote is ‘one person cannot change the world, but can change the world for one person.’ The love we bring to the people of Kolkata really makes a difference, and changes us forever. Never before have I had such a challenging experience, never before have I cried so much, laughed so much… and felt so much. I can’t wait to meet you wonderful people, and begin our journey together. For now, feel free to talk to me anytime you want.

Until January… lots of love, Charlotte xox

BURGOYNE, Daisy – St Philips College – Alice Springs

Hey every1!! My names Daisy and I am in year 9 at St Philips College in Alice Springs. I'm only 14 (almost 15!! :P) so from the profiles I've seen so far I think I'm the youngest person going this year!! I'm Alice born and bred and wouldn't have it any other way, cause it is such an incredible place. I love music, drama, dance, horse riding, shopping and hanging with my friends. I have also played clarinet for 5 years, and have recently taken up the flute. I'm a pretty easy going person and I love meeting new people and making new friends.
I heard about the Pilgrimage 2 years ago when our school first got involved with the project and ever since then I've been really eager to go on POH 08. It's really hard to believe I'm actually going now, as earlier this year I was told not to get my hopes up because I was the only one from our school who had applied. I've only been overseas once before, to bali, so im a little apprehensive cause i know its going to be a HUGE culture shock. But at the same time im so excited. I've heard so many good things from people who have already gone and I know this is going to be a life changing experience.
Looking forward to meeting you all!! feel free to email me whenever :) See you soon!!

CALDERA, Mr Kavindu – Christ Church Grammar School – Perth – POH08 India Staff
(Assistant to Mr Neil Saggers)

My name is Kavindu (Kav) Caldera and I am currently studying Dentistry at the University of WA and I was fortunate enough to attend Christ Church Grammar School for the last 5 years of my life. I was born in Sri Lanka (an island nation located about 30km off the south coast of India). Basically all of my family lives there (cousins, aunties, uncles, grandparents etc) and as a result my family try to fly over there every few years. This means that I have had a bit of exposure to the immense poverty and some of the sights, sounds and smells that I am sure we will all experience on this upcoming trip.

I honestly cannot wait to go on this incredibly life changing journey. I am sure that obviously I will benefit from this trip but more importantly plenty of other deserving people, both directly and indirectly. I know from my friends that have gone on previous pilgrimages that they come back changed people with a better understanding of what is really important in this life. As a young staff member I also hope to be someone that any of the pilgrims will be able to approach especially for debriefing as we all go through this period of incredible change at anytime throughout the tour and after we arrive back into our normal lives.

CHADWICK, Carly – Seymour Girls School – Adelaide

Hello everyone! My name is Carly and I’m 17. I am currently in year 12; I have two older sisters, who have sadly moved out and now I’m an only child at home with my parents. My favorite city is Melbourne; I love the culture, fashions and art. I haven’t always been a city kid, for 12 years I lived in the Barossa Valley which is where most of my childhood memories lie. My favorite time of year is winter, mainly because I love winter fashions and rugging up in cold weather. It is also when hockey season is which my favourite sport and I’ve been playing for about 10 years now. Music is a big part of my recreational time… well not playing but love listening and seeking out cool new bands and going to concerts. My favorite subject at school is Studies of Societies, which has definitely opened my eyes to all the different societies and cultures… and influenced my decision to go to India. Going to India I doubt will match any other forms of charity or service I have been apart of, I am so excited to be apart of the POH and to have the opportunity to make a difference for a few of the many people who are suffering. I look forward to the challenge and sharing my experiences with you, can’t wait to meet everyone! Bye for now, Carly.

COTTER, Stacey – Firbank Anglican Girls School - Melbourne

Hi everyone, I’m Stacey! I’m 17 years old and currently in year 12 at Firbank Grammar School in Melbourne.

I love water, you could say it’s my second home. I love to swim and I love playing water polo, though I don’t play as much as I used to due the demands of this final year of school. I love music, even though I can’t sing, or play any instruments particularly well. I love the outdoors, everything about it, and thrive on pushing myself to the limit.

Friends of mine went on the pilgrimage of hope at the beginning of this year and the stories of they brought home were incredible. Their passion was contagious and made me want to see and feel everything they had experienced and to help in any way that I can. I’m looking forward to this challenge, and can’t wait to experience it with all of you!

Love Stace

DARROCH, Fiona - Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College - Newcastle - POH08 Psychologist

I am Fiona Darroch and I am the Counsellor and Psychologist for the Pilgrimage in 08. This will be my first Pilgrimage to India, and I am looking forward to it immensely. We are all Pilgrims together – everyone will be experiencing some challenging moments and going beyond our comfort zones. We will also be having a great time and there will be lots of enjoyment during the weeks we are together. We will have opportunities for developing new friendships that may last a long time.

My vocation enables me to share in people’s lives in significant ways, something that makes me a very privileged person indeed. I love my work as a school counsellor, especially as I am able to get to know the students as they grow and develop from small children into wonderful young adults.

It is really important that you know that the Counsellor is there as a resource person for you, to enable you to get as much from this experience as you possibly can. It is not just that the Counsellor is there when a person has issues or difficulties arising from things that happen; the Counsellor is a person who can help you achieve your personal goals. During this Pilgrimage I would love you to see me as someone who can help you stretch yourself, to help you deepen your self-awareness and personal resilience, and to become more and more the person you want to become. And you will be doing the same for me, because I am still growing and changing as a person too. Your relationship with me will be part of my life journey.

I will be relying heavily on the peer support people to ensure that you are well supported throughout the Pilgrimage; they have been chosen for their experience and wisdom as well as their willingness to help you get the most out of the whole experience.

DAVIS, Ms Sally – Firbank Anglican Girls School - Melbourne – POH08 India Staff

Hello to all going on the 2008 Pilgrimage of Hope – India.  My name is Sally Davis and I am sending this email from Firbank Grammar School, a school which I began teaching at this year.  Despite having over 20 years experience as a teacher I feel I am quite a ‘rookie’ with respect to knowing how this school operates and familiarity with the ethos and school environment here.  I traveled through India over 20 years ago and I have always wanted to return, but with family commitments and such the opportunity has never arisen.  Early this term I listened to a presentation from the school’s 2007 pilgrims and was bowled over with how they spoke about their experiences in India.  Their talk was impressive and inspiring and after their talk I casually mentioned how I would like to return.  So here I am, going on what should be an amazing journey both personally and professionally.  I face the challenges ahead with a little trepidation and a lot of excitement and look forward to being a support for students involved in the Pilgrimage.

FICKLING, Ms Sheree – St Philips College – Alice Springs – POH08 India Staff

My name is Sheree Fickling and I have been a teacher at Saint Philips College, Alice Springs for the last four years. I am originally from Queensland and worked in the rainforests of the Wet Tropics and America for many years as a biologist. I love being outdoors and have travelled widely and lived and worked in other countries. My mother was a Lay Minister for the Anglican Church and established a home for aged people and Community Care in a small country town where I grew up, so I have valued the important role of helping and improving the lives of others from a very young age. I have always wanted the opportunity to extend and widen my community service work with another culture. I had the privilege of being a part of the Pilgrimage of Hope in 2007 and valued my experiences immensely. We encountered so many dedicated people who work tirelessly to help others and we were fortunate to be a small part of that help over our time in India. Witnessing some of the projects in Kolkata has been thought provoking, generating ideas for potential projects that we could conduct in our own communities. I am looking forward to returning to Kolkata to share the experience with four more students from Saint Philips, along with the whole Pilgrimage of Hope group, who I look forward to meeting soon.

HAWKSWORTH PETER – Christ Church Parish- Perth– POH08 India Staff -
Co-coordinator POH09India - Adults

Hi, My name is Peter. I was born and educated in England, rather longer ago than I like to own up to, but my family roots are in New Zealand. In my late teens I was a member of a medical team to Nepal, and as part of that trip I had to visit Kolkata, at that time it was called Calcutta. That was some 40 years ago. Since then I have had a wide range of employment situations, the high lights have been working with intellectually disabled children in New Zealand and the years spent in youth work, with the homeless and marginalized on the streets of Perth. I am married, and have been for 33 years, have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. The opportunity to join the pilgrimage of hope team and share in the experience, of serving in Kalkotta is exciting, and a privilege.

HEANES, Thomas (POH07-CCGS) - Peer Support Leaders – POH08 India PSL

My name is Thomas Heanes. At the moment I am an arts student at UWA, doing psychology and philosophy. Formerly of Christ Church, I was a pilgrim on the 2007 trip and after only a short while being in India, I was already thinking of coming back as a peer support leader. I have always loved travelling and India was on top of my list of places I would love to go. After being there, it still is.
My interests (apart from philosophy, psychology and travelling) include music, as with most people my age, and since I finished school last year, I have found more time for reading. I do have an interest in history, which is shown in what I read and the same can also be said of science fiction. All this, I feel, does not say a great deal about me.  Something I can say is that the work I did in India was probably more enjoyable than any hobby or interest I may have. In addition to this, I am always up for a good laugh. I am looking forwards to sharing the experience of Kolkata with you all.

HELSBY, Joshua – Christ Church Grammar School – Perth

Howdy Everyone. My name’s Joshua Helsby and I’m currently at Christ Church Grammar in Claremont, preparing to graduate with flying colours [hopefully(!)] at the end of next year. I’ve begun my search for balance in life, which involves spending equal time on all aspects of me. Generally speaking that means friends, family, academic studies, work and my sporting and cultural activities. I’m in the process of completing my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, for which I’ve begun ballroom dancing, windsurfing and academic peer tutoring.

I constantly crave the summer months when the wind is fresh and the beaches hot, and I can spend my days on the water, but during the winter I occupy myself reading by the gas heater and running Cross Country, keeping me fit and my mind focused. I don’t like to waste time, but my favourite time killer is watching the Chaser’s War on everything every Wednesday night, and relaxing listening to my favourite bands, like The Killers and Red Hot Chilli Peppers. My previous records of service include belong to the Scouting Movement and being apart of CCGS’s Environment Community Group, and plan to be further involved in community activities in the lead up to and following the Pilgrimage of Hope.

HERMAN, Benjamin  – Christ Church Grammar School – Perth

Hi Everyone. My name is Ben Herman, and I'm currently attending Yr 12 at CCGS in Perth. I'm very passionate about helping things that I feel need help, be it people, animals or the environment. As a result I am a strong believer in things like justice and conservation, and I feel that this is the area I definitely want to move into. And it's because of this, amongst other things like just being able to go to India, that I decided to take part in the POH. My keen interest in different cultures comes from my background, which is half Japanese and half Australian, as I lived in Japan until I was 9. I've been privileged to be able to go travelling to many different countries, but nowhere like India, which is in a truly 3rd world environment. I'm sure this will be an amazing experience that will open my eyes and give me better direction of where to take my life after school. My hobbies are mainly sport ( i won't do a list..), music, movies etc....and I love my dog From the introductions up here already, it looks like a really good group and I can't wait until January. I look forward to seeing you all! Ben

HONEY, Emily – St Hilda’s Anglican Girls School – Perth

Hi crew, my nameís em honey and I'm in year 11 at St.Hildas in Perth. I've lived in perth pretty much my whole life, and I love it here, but I also love to travel, wether it be within WA, interstate or internationally. I have heaps of hobbies including writing, reading about philosophy and searching for old hats and hoodies. I have an ongoing obsession with fish and chips, and Iím one of those people who pretend they can skate but really can't because they have no co-ordination. Another hobby of mine is film, and I plan on making a pretty rad one whilst we are in India. I am SO excited to have the chance to volunteer in India, and I feel so lucky to have been accepted as part of the 2008 Pilgrimage of Hope.  I canít even begin to fathom the cultural shock I will be exposed to when we arrive, but I am truly looking forward to making a hands-on difference in the lives of those people who need it most, as well as challenging myself both mentally and emotionally. I canít wait to meet everyone in India, but until then, Chillax kids.

Thanks Em Honey

HOULIHAN, Sister Natalie IBVM – Loreto Sister – Sydney  - POH08 India Chaplain

My name is Sr Natalie Houlihan.  I belong to a women’s Religious Order founded by Mary Ward.  I am currently studying Theology in Sydney where I find my understanding of life, God, church, faith and sense of mission being both challenged and enriched.

The opportunity to journey with people, especially young Australians, as they grow in their faith and relationship with God has always been dear to my heart.  I believe that we are here to listen, learn and help one another in order that we discover the God within and around us.  I have been privileged in my upbringing having come from a farming town in the western districts in Victoria that consisted of many faith-filled and committed individuals and families.  I consider myself blessed for having had such a fortunate upbringing.

To date I have been overseas a number of times and more recently in 2006 I journeyed with a small group of students from Perth to India on Pilgrimage in order that we become more familiar with the Loreto and Jesuit Missions in Kolkata and beyond.  During this time, I gained both in insight and love of the Indian people, especially the children.  I am passionate about living ‘justice’ and serving the poor where I can.  I learned on this pilgrimage that it was we (the pilgrims) who were transformed as a result of the experience.

It is my hope that on this particular Pilgrimage of Hope each pilgrim enters wholeheartedly into the experience and in doing so is transformed in heart and mind.  Such an opportunity is undoubtedly a privileged one and so we are encouraged to approach this time together as ‘gift’, with an openness and genuine concern for those we meet and those we journey with.  May we pray for one another and I look forward to meeting each pilgrim in the near future.  God Bless Natalie.

HURLEY, Ellen – Seymour College – Adelaide

Hey guys! My name is Ellen Hurley and I am doing year 12 at the moment at Seymour College in good old Adelaide! The subjects I’m doing this year are Maths Studies, Specialist Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Legal Studies. Legal is my favourite subject as I find it really interesting and have a great teacher. I was born in a smallish country town on the Murray River and really loved my time there, and still love catching up with all my old friends. I have an older brother who has finished school, and two younger sisters who are both at Seymour as well. As we lived on the river when we were growing up some of my favourite hobbies are water sports: hydro sliding (aka knee boarding), skiing, wakeboarding and biscuiting. I’m also involved in the music, sports and public speaking at school and enjoy being a part of them. I was so excited to learn that I was going to India as part of the PoH 08 as I had heard about it from other schools and had thought, and still do, that it was a great opportunity to gain an understanding of the problems some people have to face every day, some of which we can only imagine. This will also be my first big trip overseas and I am really looking forward to it, and to sharing it with all of you guys

JANSEN, Ms Jennifer  – St Norbert Catholic College – Perth – POH08 India Staff

My name is Jennifer Jansen.  I teach English and Religion at St Norbert College (SNC) and I am also a Head of House.

I have been teaching at SNC since 1992 (yes it is a long time!) although I did take two years off in 1997/8 to work as a volunteer teacher in Samoa. My two years away definitely whetted my appetite to learn about other cultures and our global family.

I first heard of the Pilgrimage of Hope at a staff presentation and was very keen to take up the opportunity to apply for POH08 although I was apprehensive about how emotionally challenging the trip might be.  Still, I am very much looking forward to experiencing the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of POH08 and especially experiencing it all for the first time with six students from the school.

I have also been to some parts of India. Both of my parents are from Sri Lanka which is a small island off the southern coast of India. My parents are interested in the Indian culture because it is so similar to the typical Sri Lankan culture. I have some understanding of the Indian culture and I hope this POH08 India trip would give me the opportunity to see how people could cope in adverse circumstances. I look forward to meeting you all!

LAU, Mr Samuel – Christ Church Grammar School – Perth – POH08 India Staff (Assistant to Mr Neil Saggers)

Hey all! My name’s Samuel Lau and I’m coming along as a representative of the CCGS Old Boys Association. I finished School in ’05 and have since been studying Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Western Australia. I’m an avid Martial Artist and have been training in the traditional Okinawan self-defence form of Karate for close to seven years.  I love music and summer, preferably combined into those awesome summer music festivals we all love!

Being half Hungarian, and half Malaysian (an obscenely bizarre mix, I know), I feel that my diverse exposure to a wide range of cultures has definitely been an enriching part of my life. I love to travel and experience the different worlds out there. I’ve been to many places including Japan, Europe, Indonesia and Thailand. India however, will be a whole new adventure and experience for me. Although I’ve been to impoverished areas and performed some charity work, I doubt anything I’ve done before hand will compare to the scope of work waiting for us on the POH; which I love.

Although it’s very hard to say exactly what the pilgrimage means to me, I look forward to it is as an opportunity to put myself out there, experience a new world, help out others and challenge myself on a completely new level. I don’t really know what kind of adventure to expect, but I’m excited to be sharing the experience with all of you.

I look forward to meeting you all shortly! Also feel free to add me to your MSN list, or visit MySpace

LEAVERS, Sharleen – St Norbert Catholic College – Perth

My name is Sharleen Leavers. I am an Anglo Indian girl born in Calcutta, India. I moved to Perth when I was 8 yrs old. I am a year 11 student from St Norbert college Perth. my hobbies include music (RnB and Hip Hop), dancing and watching movies. I am a very natural person, I tend to try to put others ahead of myself because without these people you basically got nothing in this world. like any girl out there I love shopping and talking. I love adventure and I absolutely love to take risks. family and friends are the most important things is my life and they have always been, where would I be without these people who have stuck by me through thick and thin, no matter what they have supported me and always have had a helping hand for me to count on. I am hoping to study naturopathy at the 'Australian College of Natural Medicine', no I’m not tapped in the head I just want to open those awesome clinics wear my name would be printed in bold on the front window and maybe have a decent future.
when I heard about the pilgrimage of hope experience I literally jumped at the opportunity and gave it my all. when I heard about how I got in, I was very happy, I was also proud of my self on accomplishing this dream. I think that this experience is one that I will never forget, I am very much looking forward to it as I love India with a passion and I love caring for people, I love taking risks and I am positive that this one is going to be a very big one! LEWIS, William – St Norbert Catholic College – Perth

Hay everyone. My name is William Lewis. I am currently enrolled in St. Norbert College which is in WA where I am currently learning English Literature, Math Foundations, Physical Education Studies, Economics, Senior Science and Religion. In my last few years I have taken to a routine of attending a gym in my local area where I have successfully lost around 40 kilos in the last 3 years which I am proud of. I love hiking down around the southern coast of WA, the sights of nature down there or some of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. Rain is also a favourite of mine in which I love to simply just stand in or go for runs in. I love all my friends and family, socializing plays a huge part of my life as I can’t see myself being who I am today without all the influences I have had.

The world is far from perfect. The thought of being oblivious to this and living is my own little world does not suit me. On hearing of POH08 it was like I heard a calling to finally make my difference. I know what awaits me will be by far the most demanding and challenging thing I have ever faced or may ever face but I can’t wait to do so. I don’t know exactly what I will gain from this Pilgrimage but I have a feeling it will be a life changing experience by far and this unforeseen change has given me the strength and confidence to persevere.

"Into the times of tomorrow I look with a smile,

An adventure I’will have, a changed man I will become.

An experience of a life time, unforgettable memories I am sure,

A peace unlike no other to be found and new friends onwards bound.

That day will come, and I will meet you all,

Until then, safe journey my fellow India Pilgrims of 2008"

I will be seeing you soon.

Li, Pearl – Seymour College – Adelaide

Hi everyone! I am Pearl Li, a year 10 student from Seymour College, Adelaide.  I was born in Wagga Wagga, NSW but then moved to Yeppoon in Queensland as a toddler where the year-long heat developed my love for summer. We later moved to Adelaide when I was four.
I love hanging out and chatting with friends, reading a good book snuggled up on a cold winter’s day, listening to music, watching a good TV drama and discussing it on online forums. Oh, I love eating too – ice cream to be exact. I’m also fond of editing videos and movies as well as watching them!  The sports I play include netball, tennis and soccer which I have just taken up this year (no regrets there). I enjoy playing netball and soccer because I get to work as a team with friends and others which I find rewarding and fun. I play the violin and took up percussion last year.
I have done a little bit of community service before, and I believe that the Pilgrimage of Hope ’08 in India will really broaden my perspective on the world today. I have travelled to Hong Kong (where my parents came from), China, US, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and recently returned from a study tour in Japan. India would be very different from those countries that I have been to before, but I think that it is going to be a very good cultural and life-learning experience for me.
I am looking forward to meeting everyone next January – see you soon!

LORD, Fr David – Peter Moyes Anglican Community School – Perth – POH08 India Staff

My name is David Lord and I am currently the chaplain at Peter Moyes Anglican Community School, this is my fifth year in school chaplaincy. Prior to working in school ministry I have worked in a number of parishes around the Perth Diocese, both metropolitan and country. My passion in life is rugby union and I am an ardent fan of the Western Force and the Wallabies. I also love riding my Honda Goldwing motorcycle whenever I get chance. I am married to Lyn and we have 5 adult children. Since I have been working in school ministry I have wanted to enable our students to be involved in service and mission work to people, cultures and places that would stretch and challenge them, and enable them to experience life in ways that they could not do so in their normal suburban setting. I was involved in the 2007 pilgrimage to Fiji which I thought was an amazing experience, and saw the students I took there grow and develop in wonderful ways. I am very much looking forward to being involved in the 2008 pilgrimage to India, realising that it will challenge me in ways that I cannot even think of at this point; also realising that this is a wonderful opportunity to work with a large group of people who are trying to make a difference to people’s lives who normally have very little.

MADDEN, Alysha – St Norbert Catholic College – Perth

Hi everyone :) My name's Alysha, and I'm currently at St Norbert College (SNC) where my friends there are pretty much my motive. Im born in Australia, but both my parents are from Burma, where we go back there every year to do charity work and to see our remaining family. I love drawing and I LOVE makeup ( whether it be reading makeup books or working with it) this is definetely my passion and strongest hobby. After school, depending on how much I save :S  I want to travel around for a while, seeing where I can go and what I can do with makeup, followed by returning back to Australia to study Psychology.

Even though I have done charity work overseas, I can't wait to work with new people in a new environment as I know it will be completely different and life changing - this is what I want; to have a new opening in my life. Im really excitied about this whole Pilgrimage and can't wait to meet you all.

MAIR, George (POH05,CCGS) - Peer Support Leaders – POH08 India PSL

Hey team, my name is George Mair and I like stuff. The stuff I love most includes surfing, music and of course friends and family. I've lived in WA all my life and, in fact, in the same house all my life and even the same bedroom (I think). I used to go to Christ Church Grammar School In Perth but graduated in 2005, so currently I'm studying science/commerce at the University of Western Australia, focusing on biochemistry and marketing, but in reality I have no idea what I want to be. When I'm not at uni, which is quite often, I coach tennis, skateboard or surf. Whenever I can I head down south to our farm on the coast at Gracetown, just near Margaret River. I love to travel, no matter the mode, which is one of the reasons I was lucky enough to go on the first POH in 2005. It was an amazing experience - the food, the smells, the people, the culture - and my eyes were opened to the extent where if they had they been opened anymore my eyelids would cover my eyebrows, and that would hurt. Never the less, I cannot wait to return to Kolkata to offer my services again to the poorest of the poor. "Peace out, homies."

MASSIE Ms Ruth – Seymour Girls School – Adelaide  – POH08 India Staff

My name is Ruth Massie and I am from South Australia.  I am married with three children. I am Head of English and Clan Guardian at Seymour College in Adelaide.

I have spent most of term 2 on an extended visit to China while on Long Service Leave. Rather than just see the East Coast my husband and I also managed to get to Yunnan, Tibet, the Gobi and the Far West. I have in the past traveled extensively in the sub-continent and have enjoyed independent travel in both India and Sri Lanka.  While in India (a very long time ago) I did not manage to visit Calcutta and look forward to doing so in 2008.  My eldest son recently spent six months of his GAP year doing volunteer teaching in a school outside of Mumbai.  His experiences and mine have prepared me for the challenges and wonderful experiences offered by Pilgrimage of Hope.  I shall share these with a group of committed young ladies from the College. This is Seymour College’s first experience of POH and having heard so much about it we are very much looking forward to our active participation.

MATYEAR, Samuel  – Christ Church Grammar School – Perth

Hey, I’m Sam Matyear, a year 9 student at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth. I’ve been doing Surf Life Saving for over 8 years and enjoyed tae-kwon-do as a black belt for several years. I’ve traveled over the world to countries such as New Zealand, America and a few islands including Fiji.
I listen to all types of music, and play all sorts of Sports, including surfing, swimming, hockey, rowing, running, basically anything which is thrown before me, hence the reason I wouldn’t let this valuable POH experience go by.
Change, in my point of view, is vital and helps prepare for future experiences, though I think it is rare to be lucky enough to come across another wonderful opportunity such as the POH to India. I don’t know exactly what to expect, though I have been talking to a few people at my school who have experienced it before, and it sounds like something that’s far too valuable to miss.
It can be kind of nerve racking knowing that I’ll be one of the youngest people venturing on the POH to India, though I guess that everyone has something that might be worrying them.
I’m looking forward to meeting everyone as Soon as possible!

McNAMARA, Molly – Firbank Anglican Girls School - Melbourne

Hi, my name is Molly. I am seventeen and am in Year 11 at  Firbank Grammar School in  Melbourne. For the last

two years I lived in  Byron Bay with my mum, dad and younger brother, and have recently moved back to Melbourne to finish my schooling. I live with my friend and her family, but go home to Byron every couple of weeks to see my family and friends.

I like surfing, touch football, basketball and hanging out with my friends. I like to travel, and learn about new cultures and meet new people. I have recently returned from Europe where I practiced my French and ate way too much chocolate. Going to  India, for me, is an experience I have yearned for since I first learnt of the many issues and injustices of poverty and sickness that are so common in the country. Thinking of all of the people I have once visualized, and knowing, now, that I can do something to help them, is one of the best feelings I have experienced in my life so far. My dream is to live and work in a community in an underdeveloped country, where my assistance can really make a difference, and I can lighten the day for at least one person. I am really pumped to be going to India as it has been my life-long ambition to help those in need. I can’t wait to see you all there, and am looking forward to the experiences we will share.

Hey! My nameís Katharine Mummert and I am in year 12 at St Hildas in Perth. I went on the Pilgrimage of Hope in January this year and knew as soon as I got home that I had to go back! India and its people impacted on me emotionally in ways I never thought possible. I returned from the Pilgrimage with a burning passion for a country I barely knew and a determination to return as soon as possible. Those of you going for the first timeÖget excited! It is such a privilege to be a part of this trip, and you wont ever regret grasping the opportunity.
I have a pretty tough year ahead of me (being in my final year at school) so, if I get through it alive, I look forward to meeting those of you I don't know!
Please get in contact; I would love the chance to get to know more of you before the trip.

PATON, Verity - St Brigidine Girls School – Sydney

Hi everyone, my name is Verity Paton. I’m in year 11 at Brigidine College St Ives in Sydney. I am a dancer and I have been dancing for nearly 10 years of my life. I love the exercise and friendships I have formed through dancing and most of all performing on stage. I love to listen to music and being around people. I love to laugh and make other people laugh to. I have only ever been overseas once, to Malaysia. That was a culture shock to see the diversity of living over there. India I believe will take me in and I will never want to leave. I am the type of person to get attached easily which I can see myself getting attached to India and it’s culture quite easily. I have done some charity work through school and church before although I believe that nothing will compare to what I will experience when I visit such a place like India.

The pilgrimage to me is something that I think I will never experience in my life ever again. It will be an opportunity of a lifetime and I wish that this trip will lead me onto doing something like this when I am older and more independent of myself. I am excited to meet new people and share this wonderful experience with you all! See you soon!

POTTER, Ms Emma  – St Hilda’s Anglican Girls School – Perth – POH08 India Staff

My name is Emma Potter and I am currently employed full time at St Hilda’s ASG in the Outdoor Education Department.  Originally from South Australia I have found home in Perth with a lifestyle which complements my passion for the outdoors, coastal living to support my surfing habit, and a great community in which to live comfortably.  A returned St Hilda’s pilgrim from 2007 asked me to come along and hear first hand hers and other pilgrims’ experiences early this year.  I was extremely moved by the presentation and stories and knew it was something I needed to do.  I am privileged in my job and my life and it was the imbalance I saw in some of the photographs that appealed to me about the Pilgrimage of Hope to India, and the opportunity to give more to the wider community.

I have traveled quite extensively myself and am fortunate to travel with work also, so am familiar with long nights in airports, alien food, strange smells, and the often humorous and humbling experience visiting a different country brings.  Needless to say though I am sure the Pilgrimage of Hope 2008 will be like nothing I have encountered before.  Not only am I looking forward to this trip as something I can give but also something I can experience with 8 girls from the school.

PRIMROSE, Shane (POH06-TAS) - Peer Support Leaders – POH08 India PSL

Hey I’m Shane. I am 18, I attend TSS on the Gold Coast and I was lucky enough to join Beej and the rest of the crew on POH06. Now in 2008 I get to hang out with you guys on the Pilgrimage as a peer support leader!!
I’m passionate about my sports Surfing and Football – I play 3 codes Soccer, Rugby and AFL. I also like playing just about anything else except for cricket… This doesn’t work out so well seeing as we are going to India but oh well. Music is also a passion but I don’t know how to play anything so I just listen, it’s easier. (Yes Byron I am jealous of your Guitar skills.)
Going to India is one of the greatest things I have ever done. Come February I’m sure you will feel the same. Some people might tell you it’s hard but don’t let that deter you. It’s a great ride.
Shout outs must go to Bibi, Liv, Kat, Charlotte and of course The Monk.
Cheers guys.

RUSSELL, Amber – Peter Moyes Anglican Community School – Perth

Hi, my name is Amber Russell. I am in year 9 and I am turning 15 in November. My childhood has been very interesting. I was born in South Africa and at the age of 2 in 1994 I came to Perth on holiday and within a matter of hours my parents decided that they loved Perth so much that they wanted to live here. I love the beach which includes going out on my boat, fishing, swimming and snorkelling. I am very passionate about theatre and music. I have travelled around the world quite a lot and love experiencing the different cultures. This includes: South Africa China, New Zealand, Hawaii, USA and Britain.

Although I was very young when I left South Africa I have maintained my contact and interest in the Country. My heritage has also provided me with a sensitivity to the plight of the poor and the under privileged. I have been exposed to impoverished areas but India will be an adventure unlike anything I’ve done before.

Many hours I have spent daydreaming about this incredible trip and contemplating what the people, adventures and experiences that I will face will be like. I have now realised that this pilgrimage will be something I have never before experienced and that I must embrace the culture and I look forward to the unknown.  Can’t wait to begin this journey, See you all soon…

SAGGERS, Mr Neil – Christ Church Grammar School – Perth – POH08 India Staff

I have been fortunate to work in many challenging jobs at CCGS over the last 20 years….from living at and running our Outdoor

Centre for 5 years, to coordinating a boarding house and boarding community with my family living on site for 11 years. My current role as a head of House is a pastoral focus, with responsibility for 120 boys in years 8-12.

I have been involved and run many interstate and overseas trips in the past – skiing, bush walking and adventuring for CCGS boys and students from other schools. I have also participated in a teacher exchange program to Johannesburg and spent almost a month living on a Russian Icebreaker in Antarctica, so I have plenty of travel experience as well as experience handling big groups, logistics and planning, plus coping with problems and setbacks when they arise.

My son was a member of POH 2007 with CCGS and his insights, photos and such diverse, challenging and rewarding experiences have set the scene for me to pursue the opportunities as they unfold.

TASSO, Jessica - St Brigidine Girls School – Sydney

My name is Jessica Tasso and i attend Brigidine College St.Ives. I am a happy and friendly person and i spend my time playing sport, going out with friends, and unfortunatly, as i get older, my homework pile seems to increase also. I enjoy playing basketball, soccer and softball which i have played for over 10 years...I also coach softball too. My subjects are; english, religion, mathematics, italian, and biology, but my favourite is modern history. My favourite time of year is summer as i tend to spend most of my time at the beach. I love spending time with my friends, listening to music and reading a good book.

I also love to travel, and because my mum is a travel agent, i have been all
over Europe, to England and America as well as the Pacific Islands close to home. Just last year i went to Italy on an exchange program and spent 4 weeks there on my own. My family tends to visit the sunny destinations but in contrast to this, i cant wait to visit India. Ever since Simone and the other girls came back from India, i have always wanted to experience it for myself. I realise that it is a completly different experience than that of the small charity work i have done in the past, and i am ready to embrace the opportunity positively as i tend to adapt to things quickly.

I am very excited and i cant wait to meet you!
